LUMBERTON — A 65-year-old Lumberton man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Friday, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Willie David McEachern, of 105 Marley Drive, was driving south on Hestertown Road when the 1997 Ford SUV he was driving ran off the road to the right and struck a tree on the driver’s side door, according to a report by Trooper George Inman. McEachern, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident happened one-tenth of a mile outside Lumberton, north of Chicken Foot Road, at 5:22 p.m.

McEachern, who was alone in the vehicle, was driving at about 75 mph in a 55-mph zone. There was an estimated $5,000 worth of damage done to the vehicle, according to the report.
