TABOR CITY — The St. Pauls football team rallied late in a 34-30 win at South Columbus on Friday.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) scored the first and last touchdowns of the game, getting a seven-yard run from Chuck Walters to go head in the final two minutes.

It was the Stallions’ (7-2, 4-1) first homecoming loss since 1995 and a rare October home loss. A loss by Whiteville would put St. Pauls in contention for a possible conference title.

Walters put St. Pauls ahead 6-0 with a seven-yard run to open it and served as the primary rusher, going 88 yards on 18 attempts with two touchdowns.

Malik Livingston connected on 14 of 23 pass attempts for 260 yards. He also ran for 55 yards on 14 attempts and had two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing.

Whiteville 67, Fairmont 28

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont football team allowed 41 first-half points in a 67-28 loss to Whiteville.

The Golden Tornadoes (7-2, 3-2) struggled offensively and had 14 points each half.

Red Springs 40, East Columbus 32

RED SPRINGS — Red Springs’ young offense proved itself for the first time this season, fending off a late comeback attempt by East Columbus.

“This was about a young defense stepping up,” Red Springs coach George Coltharp said.

The Red Devils (1-8, 1-4) used a plentiful offense to get ahead by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, but had quarterback Blake Greene leave the game after taking a hard hit.

Once Greene left, the Gators (2-7, 0-5) made a late push to narrow the lead, but the Red Devils made a goal-line stand in the final minute.

“East Columbus was able to make a few plays off the mistakes we made,” Coltharp said.

Greene left the game following a helmet to helmet hit but Coltharp doesn’t expect the senior quarterback to miss any time. Coltharp said Greene got right back up but was kept out due to precautionary reasons.

S. Robeson 36, W. Columbus 21

CERRO GORDO — South Robeson (5-3, 3-2) used its passing attack to open up the run game against West Columbus.

“They were a lot bigger than I thought they were. They play really well and it took us awhile to adjust to how well they ran the ball,” coach Stephen Roberson said.

Kalvis Chavis finished the game 5-10 passing for 141 yards and three touchdowns, all to different receivers and also had a touchdown on the ground.

Once the run game opened up in the second half, Andrew Hill took charge, racking up 120 yards on 14 carries for one touchdown. Juan Ellerbe had 12 carries for 74 yards.

The offense had several turnovers, but Roberson said the defense got them back, including Michael Smith’s fifth interception of the year.

Pinecrest 51, Swett 34

SOUTHERN PINES — Purnell Swett had a late scoring frenzy but it wasn’t enough to hold back Pinecrest.

The Rams (2-7, 0-3) had four passing touchdowns and one rushing in the second half from quarterback Thriston Lowry, but couldn’t overcome a 20-0 halftime deficit.

Strickland eliminated from State

RALEIGH — Purnell Swett’s Kali Strickland was eliminated in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A state girls tennis tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park. Strickland lost 6-0, 6-0 to Lauren Gish of Lake Norman. Strickland, a junior, was the first tennis player from Swett to make it to the state level.
