LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man who was fleeing an accident on Saturday crashed his vehicle into a ditch and died the next day from his injuries, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Erick Montrel Evans, 44, of Toria Drive, was driving south on Collins Road near Bertie Road about seven miles south of Lumberton when he lost control of his 1994 Chevrolet truck, according to a report filed by Trooper J.T. Locklear. The vehicle ran off the road to the right, crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left, hit a ditch and overturned.
Evans, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and pinned underneath it, the report said.
According to Sgt. Daniel Hilburn, Evans had just been involved in another crash, but information on that accident was not immediately available.
“He took off from that collision, went down the road and got in the accident,” Hilburn said.
Alcohol may have contributed to the crash, the report said. Evans was driving the speed limit, about 55 mph, when the deadly crash occurred.
Evans was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died early Sunday, according to the report.
Evans is the fifth person to die on Robeson County roads this year.
