With spring finally arriving, the local First Tee program is getting ready to start for the year, but first it needs coaches.
The First Tee of the Sandhills, a youth character education program that teaches life skills through golf, is looking for volunteers to help with classes in Robeson County. The nonprofit teaches young golfers about the game and life through activities on the course.
The program is run locally by Jamie Locklear, who coaches golf at Purnell Swett High School and also runs the Locklear Golf Academy out of Pinecrest Country Club.
“Coaching gives adults the opportunity to impact young people’s lives not only in golf, but everyday life,” Locklear said.
Prospective coaches can attend a volunteer orientation event on March 27 from 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. at Pinecrest Country Club. For information, call Locklear at 910-374-7164 or visit www.thefirstteesandhills.com.
Pinecrest will be hosting a tournament on Saturday benefiting the Purnell Swett High School football team. There is a $55 entry fee per play. Play starts at 1:30 p.m.
The club will also host a tournament on March 29 to benefit David Hunt and Santana Melvin. Hunt is 65 years old and battling cancer and Melvin is a 17-year-old cheerleader at Purnell Swett who has tumor on her brain.
The captain’s choice tournament tees off at 10 a.m. and will be separated into two flights, with prizes going to the top two teams in each flight. Entry fee is $60 per person or $240 for a team, which includes breakfast at 8:30 a.m., greens and cart fees, a red tee shot, a mulligan and range balls. All proceeds go to the medical expenses of Hunt and Melvin. Hole sponsorships are also available. For information, call Danny Henderson at 910-316-3935.
The Robeson County Humane Society will be hosting the John P. Williamson Memorial Golf Tournament on April 10.
The captain’s choice tournament is for four-person teams, each with an A, B, C, and D golfer. No team is allowed to have more than two players with a handicap less than 6. There is a fee of $75 per person or $300 per team, with hole sponsorship available for an extra $50. Entry includes cart and greens fees, mulligans, red tees, range balls and lunch at 11:30 a.m. before play starts at 1 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, with additional prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. There’s a hole-in-one prize from Prevatte’s Home Sales and all golfers in 1920s costumes will receive an extra prize. For information, call Bruce Mullis at 910-734-5068.
Fairmont GC
There’s a new man in charge over at Fairmont Golf Club. C.J. Hinson took over as the club professional in September and will be enjoying his first spring in charge.

Michael Sellers and Richard Parrish won the championship flight of a senior invitational last month with a 4-under-par 68. Ed Williams and Jerry Jolly scored a 2-over-par 74 to win the first flight.
Scott Townsend scored a hole-in-one on No. 14 and Huse Lowery scored a double-eagle on No. 5.
Cliffwood hosts a weekly Senior Invitational at 10 a.m. For $20, players get a round of golf, continental breakfast and lunch.
