Today kicks off National Certified Nurse-Midwifery Week. Southeastern Regional Medical Center employs four CNMs, who serve women that seek prenatal care at the Robeson County Health Department, Robeson Healthcare Corporation, and Southeastern Women’s Healthcare, an affiliate of SRMC.
“This week we not only celebrate Certified Nurse-Midwives, we celebrate the women and babies that we serve,” said Michelle Cox, a nurse midwife with Southeastern Women’s Healthcare. “The word midwife means with women’ The American College of Nurse-Midwives goes further to say that we are with women for a lifetime, from puberty to menopause.”
Along with prenatal care, labor support, vaginal deliveries, and postpartum care, CNMs also provide well-woman care that includes annual exams and pap smears, irregular menstrual periods, and family planning or birth control.

Mammography Day
As of yet, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in this country. Even so, there are clear steps women can take to reduce their risk. And October, which is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is the ideal time to take them.
Since breast cancer can develop even with these precautions, the American Cancer Society advises women to have yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as they are in good health. Regular mammograms can detect cancer in its early stages and give women a head start on potentially lifesaving treatment.
To raise awareness of the need for mammograms, Lumberton Radiological Associates and Southeastern Regional Medical Center are partnering with Biggs Park Mall and the city of Lumberton for the 13th annual Mammography Day event, which will be held Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Biggs Park Mall. The event will feature a free meal for attendees, entertainment by members of The Carolina Breakers, and educational and informational booths about women’s health. Participants will have an opportunity to enter a drawing for a free mammogram. Free mini chair massages will also be offered.
Community listening tour
Along with Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s new name, Southeastern Health, announced in August, comes a new tagline: Better Health — Starting with You. As a way to jump start this path to better health in our communities, Southeastern will host two community meetings , one in Red Springs and one in Fairmont. The goal of these events is to listen closely to the community and relay the vision and ideas for improving health in our region to SRMC’s board of trustees during a planning meeting in early 2013.
“It is our hope that energetic leaders who are concerned about the health of their communities will attend these events so that we may fully understand the current health status of the communities we serve,” said SRMC President/CEO Joann Anderson. “They are encouraged to bring forth ideas that will begin to move individuals and communities to better health.”
The first community meeting will be held Oct. 30 at the Red Springs Community Building located at 122 Cross St.. The second is scheduled for Nov. 13 at the Fairmont-South Robeson Heritage Center located at 207 S. Main St. Both events will offer refreshments and networking opportunities beginning at 6:30 p.m.; the feedback portion of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
Free valet parking
Southeastern will begin offering free valet parking at the hospital’s main entrance on Oct. 15. The ervice is provided by The Gift Shop at SRMC and the SRMC Foundation.

— How to use valet parking? On the main campus, go directly to the circle drive at the main entrance. A valet parking attendant will give you a claim ticket and park your vehicle in a reserved space on the hospital campus.
— Where to get your car? Show your claim ticket to the parking attendant at the main entrance and the attendant will retrieve your car. To retrieve your keys after 3 p.m., present your claim ticket to the attendant at the information desk in the main lobby. Those leaving the facility after 9 p.m. should call 910-671-5449 to retrieve their keys. Those claiming keys after 3 p.m. will be responsible for retrieving their own vehicles from the valet parking area.
— When valet service is available? Our valet parking service will be available Mondays through Fridays, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding holidays.
