LUMBERTON — The Lumberton City Council at its regular meeting on Monday will hold public hearings on a care facility for veterans and an ordinance outlining restrictions for sweepstakes cafes.

The public is invited to hear about a conditional-use permit requested for an intermediate care facility to be located at 210 E. 15th Street.

The city’s Planning Board has received signatures from 63 area residents protesting the project, and is expected to recommend that the city deny Southern Wellness Center’s request to provide housing and health care for veterans at that location.

The council will also revisit an ordinance proposed to replace a moratorium banning electronic gaming establishments that is set to expire June 10. The ordinance restricts the location, size and hours of sweepstakes cafes and has been brought before the council several times.

The council will also discuss budget requests from more than 15 local nonprofits, an engineering services agreement for renovations to the kitchen and restrooms at Bill Sapp Recreation Center and a design agreement for a score tower at Northeast Park.

A Pride in Lumberton award will be presented to Kash n’ Karry grocery store on Martin Luther King Drive when the meeting begins at 7 p.m.
