To the Editor,

I’ve lived in Robeson County for 26 years, most of which has been keeping up with racing news. The NASCAR news in The Robesonian has dwindled to practically nothing! It’s bad enough there’s no paper published on Mondays — the day after most NASCAR races. But the paper does come out on Fridays and Saturdays with very few articles or statistics leading up to Sunday’s races. When Maurice Leggett was writing for The Robesonian, his opinion column was not only newsy, interesting, and informative, there was much more coverage of all racing events.

Now most racing articles have bylines from the Associated Press or staff report.

Does this mean the same person that brings us the local chili cook-off results is also reporting on “Trouble in Turn 2?” If history is truth then organized automobile racing began right here in good ole North Carolina with the like of Junior Johnson and his bootleg whiskey running buddies souping up their cars to outrun the revenuers!

Sure, we’ve lost Wilkesboro and Rockingham, but we’ve still got Charlotte and Darlington. There are many many true racing fans in your reading area that thirst for information on their favorite teams and drivers. The Robesonian just teases us with snippets and bits of coverage from this ever-growing sport.

Please, we need more, more, and much more.
