MAXTON Three Robeson County men have been charged in the murder of a 37-year-old man who was shot and killed late Wednesday night.
Bobby Glenn Mitchell died of a gunshot wound to the head, inside a shed on Hattie Street that he called home, during what investigators believe was an attempted robbery.
A sheriffs report said that Mickey Laverne Locklear, 35, of the 80 block of Porformance Lane, Rowland; and Herman Ray Locklear, 42, of the 70 block of Chalmers Drive, and Rodney Junior Jones, 28, both of Maxton, were each charged with first-degree murder and taken to the Robeson County jail where they were being held without bond.
According to the report, Marcus Locklear, 26, of the Hattie Street home, told investigators that he heard a knock at the door and saw a man carrying a rifle.
After retrieving a shotgun, Locklear said he saw the suspects walk to the out building where Mitchell was staying.
At least two of the men were armed with long guns, Locklear said.
As Mitchell opened the door the men raised their guns and fired a shot. Mitchell was struck in the head and fell to the ground. Locklear told deputies he opened fire on the trio from a window in his home before the men fled in a blue Dodge Neon.
Locklear placed a call to 911 at about 11:02 p.m., but the report said Mitchell was found dead at the scene.
Det. Howard Branch said the Dodge Neon was spotted about 30 minutes later when troopers from the state Highway Patrol saw the suspects traveling on U.S. 74, near Chalmers Road. Four men were taken into custody from the vehicle, but one man was not charged, Branch said.
No weapons were recovered.
