FRINGE: Youth golfers win on the road

Robeson County golfers Kajun Hunt, Walter Ghaffar and Silas Woods all recorded wins recently in youth events.

Hunt and Woods both won at the Brunswick Plantation on the U.S. Kids Myrtle Beach Fall Tour and Ghaffar won the Robert Trent Jones Junior Championship at Carolina Trace in Sanford.

Hunt won the 12u divsion by shooting a 6-over-par 78 for a 6-shot win and Woods shot 93 to win the 11U division by 3 strokes. Ghaffar shot a 12-over-par 84 on day one and came back with 6-over-par 78 on day two to win the Tarheel Junior Golf Tour event by a stroke. The win was Ghaffar’s second in three starts on the tour.

Tyee Seals, 12, and Malachi Woods, 13, each finished fifth in at Brunswick Plantation.

All of the golfers are members of the Locklear Golf Academy at Pinecrest Country Club.

Cliffwood GC

Choose-up winners from Sept. 13 were John Potter, David Allen and Al Wall.

Monday’s Ladies’ League winners were Toni Robinette, Carolyn McNeil and Pandora Carter.

J.D. Revels and Hoyt Pierce won the championship flight of Tuesday’s Senior Shootout. Tom Newberry and Dave Batchelder won the first flight and Ed Williams and Jerry Jolly won the second flight.

Wednesday’s choose-up winners were Dave Batchelder, Tom Jones, Mel Britt and Chris Adams.

Fairmont GC

Fairmont will be holding the 6th annual Fairmont Chamber of Commerce Farmer’s Festival Golf Tournament on Oct. 18.

The four-person team tournament is scheduled for a 1 p.m. shotgun start. There’s a $50 fee per player or $200 per team, which include cart and greens fees, a mulligan, a red tee, range balls, prizes, and lunch and dinner.

Men older than 60 play the white tees, with the younger men playing the golds. Ladies are on the red tees.

The entry deadline is Oct. 16 and the field will be limited to the first 25 teams.

Pinecrest CC

Pinecrest will be holding its annual Member-Member tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day tournament will be played with two-person teams utilizing a 6-6-6 format. Nos. 1-6 each day will be played as captain’s choice, with Nos. 7-12 as best ball and Nos. 13-18 as alternate shot.

The early signup fee is $150 per team, which includes greens and cart fees, beverages and prizes. Teams get one half of their combined handicap. For information, call the club’s golf shop at 910-738-6541.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Givens Performing Arts Center will be hosting its sixth annual golf tournament on Oct. 1. The center, which has more than 100,000 people come through its doors each year, uses the tournament to raise money for its capital fund and will put proceeds towards theatre improvements.

The tournament is a four-person team handicap captain’s choice. There’s a fee of $100 per golfer or $400 per team, which includes greens fees, cart fees, range balls, a goody bag that includes a GPAC gift certificate, and lunch. Golfers can also purchase a $20 bonus package that includes a raffle ticket, two muilligans, team toss and a red tee. Sponsorship opportunities start at $100.

Tournament check-in starts at 11 a.m. the day of the tournament, with lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Scothurst GC

Scothurst had two golfers shoot career lows at the course on Sunday.

Fayetteville’s Ken Matthews birdied No. 2 and finished with a 5-over par 77. Steven Kublank was playing with him.

The same day Carmen Serbio, of Fayetteville, shot a 2-under-par 70 after logging birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 5, 12, 13 and 18. Serbio was playing with Chuck Mohn and Rennie Johnson.
