Prep roundup: Fairmont earns 10th win, sweeps St. Pauls

St. Pauls — The Fairmont volleyball team got its 10th win of the season on Monday, sweeping St. Pauls 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.

The Golden Tornadoes (10-2, 7-1 Three Rivers Conference) got behind setter Christa Thorndyke, who put together 15 assists and five digs defensively. Niya Dickens contributed from both the service line and up front with six kills and five aces.

Fairmont’s JV team also won 2-0.

Swett 4th, LHS 5th at SEC meet

LAURINBERG — Purnell Swett took fourth and Lumberton tied for fifth on Monday in a Southeastern Conference tournament at Scotch Meadows.

The Rams finished with 399 strokes to finish 93 behind leader Pinecrest and 14 behind Hoke as the Pirates tied with Richmond at 408.

Pinecrest’s Gabby Weiss won individually with a 7-under-par 65. Teammate Lizzy Nguyen had 70. Purnell Swett’s Meredith Godwin shot a career low 6-over-par 78 to lead the Rams.

Perez helps Bulldogs beat S. Columbus

TABOR CITY — A late run by Erik Perez gave the St. Pauls soccer team its third win of the season.

Perez beat four defenders on a run from midfield in the last three minutes and put a shot past the goalie to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 win over South Columbus.

It was the second goal of the game for Perez, who also had an assist on a first-half goal by Edison Morales. Hugo Calderon and Isaiah Reyes also had assists.

St. Pauls led 2-1 at halftime and allowed a tying goal in the second half before Perez’ final shot.

Lumberton shuts out Scotland

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton soccer team got its third conference win of the season after a 6-0 win against Scotland.

The Pirates (7-3, 3-1 SEC) went up 2-0 at halftime then closed the game with four goals in the second after wearing down the Scot (1-7, 1-3) defense.

“We were persistent, we stayed with it,” Lumberton coach Kenny Simmons said.

Colby Johnson had a hat trick with three goals, Arash Hosseini had two and Mihir Patel had one.

The only assist came from Patel on the game’s opening goal.
