LUMBER BRIDGE — Two Lumber Bridge brothers have been charged in the murder of a 34-year-old Shannon man.

Charles Willie Thomas, 23, of 1866 Lombardy Village Road, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of Ernest Scurlock, of 360 Lombardy Village Road, according to Robeson County sheriff’s Maj. Anthony Thompson. Edward Lee Thomas, 28, of 64 DNT Road, has been charged with accessory after the fact of murder.

According to Thompson, deputies went to Scurlock’s home at 10:48 p.m. Friday after Scurlock’s wife, Connie Lowery, called 911 when she found Scurlock on the floor in a building behind the home. Scurlock had been robbed and had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Thompson said.

Thompson, who is chief of detectives for the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, said arrests were made after investigators conducted several interviews.

He did not elaborate on what was stolen from the home or give any details on the older brother’s role following the murder, but he did say Edward Thomas was not with his brother when Scurlock was shot.

Thompson said he didn’t know if Charles Thomas and Scurlock, whose homes are about a mile and half from each other, knew each other.

Charles Thomas and Edward Thomas are being held at the Robeson County jail. Charles Thomas was being held without bond, and Edward Thomas was under a $21,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing, Thompson said.
