The people have spoken, and Jake has been deemed the more adorable critter in all of Robeson County.
The miniature beagle with the snazzy necktie garnered 1,072 votes in our Cutest Pets Contest, the most of any of the 45 submissions uploaded to our online image gallery.
In addition to 15 minutes of fame for their furry friend, owners Derrick and Paige Lee of Lumberton will receive $100.
The couple said they adopted their 2-year-old “fur baby” when he was a puppy, and listed his interests as being squeaky toys, bones, sleeping and snuggle-time.
“He has his own personality and just loves to be loved,” Paige Lee said. “He is our baby and is very spoiled.”
If the top five results from our contest, which wrapped up on Feb. 28, are any indication, Robeson County residents are definitely dog people. Canines dominated the competition, with Lumberton resident Charity Scott’s snow-loving pack of dogs Pixie, Tiger Lilly, Bo, and Little Bear taking second place with 1,000 votes.
In third place was Pembroke resident Whitney Gandy’s bowtie-wearing bulldog, Deuce, with 740 votes.
In fourth place was Lumberton resident Melinda Chavis’ half-pug, half-Dotson, Willie, with 437 votes.
In fifth place was Heather Ivey’s chihuahua siblings, Daisy and Duke, with 297 votes.
Each of the runner-ups will receive $50.
The Robesonian’s Cutest Pet Contest was made possible by a group of sponsors, including Smiles Etcetera dentistry in Lumberton; Farm and Family Center in Lumberton; Morningstar Wild in Pembroke; Heritage Reality in Lumberton; and Lulu’s Creations in Lumberton.
