LUMBERTON — The Lumberton baseball team used a small-ball tactic to get a big inning during Wednesday’s 8-3 win against Gray’s Creek.
The Pirates got runners on base in the fourth inning and dropped three bunts in a row as part of a four-run fourth inning.
“It put a lot of pressure on them by doing that,” said Lumberton coach Paul Hodges. “They made an error here and there and we broke the game open.”
The Pirates (2-2) allowed all three runs in the first three innings and trailed 3-2 heading into the fourth. The bunts included a sacrifice, a base hit and one that resulted in an error that allowed the batter to reach base.
Justice Sampson led the Pirates with a 2-for-3 day that included a double and two RBIs.
Daniel Oxendine picked up the win in relief, coming in for the fourth inning and throwing four scoreless.
Errors haunt LHS softball
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton softball team’s early-season struggles continued on Wednesday in a 15-3 loss to Gray’s Creek in six innings.
The Pirates (0-4) lost outfielder and pitcher Cece Campbell to an injury during pregame warmups and struggled in the field with 10 errors. The team struggled around the field, dropping fly balls, missing grounders and making bad throws, coach Mackie Register said.
“It was the snowball effect. One person just got contagious,” Register said.
The 10 errors nearly matched Gray’s Creek’s 11 hits and caused only five of the allowed runs to be earned. It included a five-error fifth inning.
Register said that Campbell, one of the top returners from last year, twisted an ankle before the game and is expected to be out for at least three weeks.
West Bladen rallies to beat Swett
PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett softball team allowed an early rally in a 6-1 loss to West Bladen on Wednesday.
In a matchup that’s been the final game of the Robeson County Slugfest tournament the last two years, the Rams allowed four runs in the top of the first inning.
It was part of an 11-hit day by the Knights, who were led by Laikyn Pait, who went 3-for-4, and Alana Ludlum, who finished 2-for-4.
The Rams scored their only run of the game on an RBI double by Mikala Lowry’s lone hit. Desaree Dunham led Swett with a 2-for-3 performance.
Sequoia Locklear threw a complete game for the Rams, picking up her second loss.
