The annual meeting of the Friends of the Robeson County Public Library is scheduled for April 22 at the Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton. Attendees will enjoy a social hour, a delicious dinner and a keynote speech by Brenda McKean.

Our speaker for the evening has written two volumes titled “War at My Doorsteps.” These books take place during the War Between the States and relate to events on the home front and how ordinary citizens coped with the experiences during the American Civil War.

McKean is a retired nurse anesthetis, who graduated from Duke University. Her education is mainly in medicine, but for the past 30 years she has been a devoted student and researcher of the War Between the States, giving lectures to various groups and school children.

She was a recipient of the “Bonnie Blue Award,” given by District No. 1297 SCV Camp to outstanding people in the field of Confederate history. In 2005, she received the Annie Devereux Award for exemplary service to the Soldiers’ Benevolent Society, a division of the 26th N.C.T., reflecting the honorable dedication of our forefathers. She has attended all of the annual conferences of the “Society of Women and the Civil War” since 1997, and is currently a Regent for North Carolina. McKean has presented papers twice at this conference.

The Friends of the Robeson County Public Library is a nonprofit whose purpose is to support the Robeson County Public Library and its affiliated libraries. Memberships and other donations help support the needs of the citizens of Robeson County through the public library system.

Please show your support by visiting your library this week, which is National Library Week.

Our Patron Appreciation Day is Monday from 3 until 5 p.m. in the Lumberton Library. Everyone who attends will enjoy light refreshments and bingo.

The Amnesty Food Drive begins April 21. The purpose of this event is to collect canned food for the Robeson County Church and Community Center’s pantry. Canned food may be donated at all of our libraries. Each can of food will erase up to $5 of overdue fines. If you do not owe fines, please consider donating anyway. You will be helping feed the hungry in Robeson County.

Artist Susan James will present a selection of her paintings on April 21 at 4 p.m. in the Lumberton Library. James retired from her career in education and health care and found a new passion in painting. After mastering water colors and acrylics, she took her art to the next level with oil on canvas. She studies with Georgia Ivie, a fine art prodigy.

James was named first-place winner of an art exhibition in the intermediate category sponsored by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County under the aegis of the National Arts Council of North Carolina.

Several of her pieces were displayed at the Art and Garden Show during the Great Getaway festival. Please mark your calendars for this event and come see her beautiful paintings.

The Osterneck Auditorium was draped in breath-taking artwork this past week during the Art and Garden Show. Paintings and photographs of all shapes and sizes lined the walls and inspired visitors to slow down and absorb the beauty before them. Pottery and fine china were also on display. Local garden clubs adopted a nature or floral painting and created arrangements to display during the show.

The art show highlights an abundance of local talent and I am so pleased that it was housed in the Osterneck Auditorium. Thank you to all of the garden clubs, Robeson County Arts Council volunteers, and community members who supported this event. The event was under the care of Nila Chamberlain, and like anything she has a hand in, was a wild success.

Whether you are 2 years old or 90 years old; a technology expert or a beginner; a novel devourer or a magazine flipper; or if you’re somewhere in between, we want you in our libraries. Come as you are and stay a while.
