July 29, 2014

PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will be adding some veteran experience in the pitching circle this spring.

Katie Saunders, is transferring after two years at NCAA Division I Bryant (R.I.) Unviersity to continue her athletic and academic career with the Braves.

“Katie was the right fit for us this year,” UNCP coach Brittany Bennett said. “I really am excited to add her to the junior class because she brings leadership in the circle for us and makes our pitching staff even stronger. While on campus, she gelled with our girls immediately and I knew she would be a great fit on this team. It’s a pleasure to add her to an already outstanding incoming class and we look forward to her finishing her career strong.”

Saunders, a Laguna Niguel, Calif. native, had time in 16 games as a sophomore including two appearances in conference action and 13 starts. She went 5-7 with six complete games, allowing 100 hits and 51 earned runs with 22 strikeouts and a 5.35 ERA.

In her freshman season, she pitched in 12 games with two starts and went 14 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, 19 hits allowed and 12 runs given up, as well as finishing the season with a 3.42 ERA.
