Ian Locklear, a rising senior at Purnell Swett High School, took first place in the 14-and-over division in the first two Robeson County Junior Tour events of the summer.

On June 15, Locklear shot a 3-under-par 69 to win, and on June 22 he shot an even-par 72. Blake Inman, a rising senior golfer at Lumberton High, came in second in each event, shooting a 77 each time.

During the June 15 event, Caleb Edkins came in first in the 10-11 division, shooting a 55 on nine holes. His brother Hunter won the 9-and-under division with a 62.

Junior golfers can participate in the Robeson County Junior Tour by calling the pro shop at (910) 738-6541. The events are at 8 a.m. on Mondays.

The Jerry Johnson/Robeson County Golf Championship is scheduled for July 17, 18 and 19 at Pinecrest CC.

The cost is $80 for the Championship Division, which will be a 54-hole tournament beginning on July 17. The cost is $60 for the Regular, Senior and Ladies divisions, which will feature a 36-hole format.

If there are enough young golfers entered for the Junior Division, then the cost will be $25 per player and that will include food, ranges balls and prizes. For information, call Jeff Wishart at (910) 734-7410.

Kyle Covington is the defending champion in the Open Division.

Cliffwood GC

Ladies League winners from Monday were Pandora Carter, Elise Shipman, Carolyn McNeill and Helen George.

Cliffwood’s Helen George recently won the Super Senior Division of the Cape Fear Ladies Golf Championship, which was formerly known as the Fayetteville Women's City-County Golf Championship. She won by recording rounds of 96 and 87 at Gates Four Country Club.

The next Senior Shootout will be Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Scothurst GC

Two golfers turned in stellar rounds recently.

Sixty-nine-year-old Gene Carter bettered his age by a single shot with a 4-under-par 68. Carter, a Raeford resident, was playing with Bill Tar, Earl Collins, D.J. James and Ray Maranda.

Parkton resident Samantha Henry shot a career-best 76, a round that featured 14 pars and four bogeys.

Fairmont GC

The team of Tad Wood, Barry Leonard, Chris Strickland and Jay Floyd shot a 14-under-par 56 to win the Fairmont High School Booster Club tournament on June 27. The tournament raised money for the high school’s athletic programs.

Frank McCormick, Bill Link, Ron Ivey and Sandy Bowen came in second by shooting a 57 and then winning a card playoff over the team of James Huneycutt, Molly Kruger, D.C. Atkinson and Frank Clawson.

Closest-to-the-pins went to Johnny Britt on No. 4, Brett Tedder on No. 5, Bill Link on No. 8 and James Huneycutt on Nos. 13 and 15. No. 4 was playing as a temporary par 3.

The golf course was playing to a par of 70 because of two temporary greens.
