LUMBERTON — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Lumberton as city workers prepare for the annual Christmas Parade by hanging up wreaths, lights, and tinsel.

The parade will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. on First Street behind the library and the 160 units will slowly make their way to the Biggs Mall on Elm Street.

This year’s parade marshal is Bob Fisher, who retired earlier this year as the longtime director of the Robeson County Library.

The National Weather Service is calling for a slight chance of rain and for a high of 65 degrees.

“It should be perfect parade weather,” said Cindy Kern, the executive director of the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event.

Kern said she was still getting participation requests on Thursday afternoon.

“We have a little bit of everything for everybody,” she said.

The parade will feature commercial and homemade floats, marching bands from various schools, the DARE band, beauty queens, church choirs and youth groups, antique cars and tractors, fire trucks, several ROTC groups, dance troops and — of course — Santa Claus.

The parade will be televised by WNCP Channel 6 several times during the holidays, including on Thanksgiving Day.

Lumberton is at the head of the parade, with others to follow

— Rowland’s annual Christmas parade and festival will begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 28. The Peay Family and Michael Jackson-impersonator Valerie Humphrey will perform.

— Fairmont’s second annual twilight Christmas parade will be at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 and will include a tree lighting and live entertainment by Victoria Huggins.

— The 52nd annual St. Pauls Christmas parade will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 5. There will be floats, cars, farm equipment and music followed by a reception and downtown night out.

— The 23rd annual Marietta and Whitehouse Volunteer Fire Department Christmas parade is at 11 a.m. Dec. 5. There will be food, entertainment, a raffle and auction at the Marietta Community Building after the parade.

— Pembroke’s Twilight Christmas Parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 10. There will be bands, queens, marching units, floats and Santa Claus.
