FAIRMONT — The Fairmont coaching staff tried to keep the ball out of Kasey Glover's hands.

Unfortunately for the Golden Tornadoes, Glover returned a kickoff 73 yards for a score and rushed for 133 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Jordan-Matthews Jets to a 44-26 victory over Fairmont in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.

"That was really big," Glover said about his kickoff return that gave Jordan-Matthews a 22-6 lead. "Sometimes in a game like this it's the special teams that make the difference."

Glover's return came on the heels of a 43-yard run down the left sideline on the Jets' previous possession.

"He's a big-play guy," Jordan-Matthews coach Marty Scotten said about his running back. "He has broken a lot of big plays for us in his career."

While Glover was the in the spotlight for the Jets, the team's defense was able to stymie Fairmont's rushing attack in the first half. Except for a 74-yard touchdown run by Tyreke Addison, the Golden Tornadoes only managed to drive the ball into Jordan-Matthews territory once in the first half.

"They put everybody in the box," Fairmont coach Barry Leonard said about the Jets' defense. "Plus, they were really keying on Lonnie (Nealy). They are a very strong and physical team."

After falling behind 36-6 when Fairmont's Demetrius Washington's pass was intercepted by Ches Brooks and returned 25 yards for a touchdown, Leonard said his team had a chance to toss in the towel.

"We could have just laid down out there," he said. "But they fought back and we had a chance to cut the lead down to 16. It would have have been a two possession game. I'm proud of them. It's not the outcome we were hoping for."
