Matthew Oxendine, a 36-year-old minimum-security inmate, went to the Fairmont Police Department at 2 a.m. today and will face a felony escape charge.
Oxendine is in custody at the Lumberton Correction Institution and will be there for “an undetermined amount of time in segregation unit,” according to Pamela Walker, external affairs director for the state Department of Correction.
Oxendine was part of a crew of four inmates from Robeson Correctional Center in Lumberton who were working in Fairmont when he ran away Thursday at about 5:10 p.m. when a van that was transporting the crew made a stop, Walker said.
Oxendine is serving a minimum sentence of three years and 10 months after being convicted in 2008 of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer. He was due for release in May 2012.
Walker said the Highway Patrol, more than 20 officers with North Carolina Division of Prisons, local law enforcement participated in the search.
