All questions of a soft schedule for Lumberton will be put to rest Friday when the unbeaten Pirates travel to Whiteville to take on Baxter Morris' Wolfpack.
Facing one of the 3A/2A Waccamaw Conference's top teams, Lumberton hopes to avenge last season's 10-7 loss at home to the Wolfpack that saw the game's momentum change on a late kickoff return.
The Pirates scored twice on defense in last week's 67-16 thrashing of St. Pauls. Lumberton's unit will be test Friday against Faquonn Thompson and the Wolfpack. Thompson, a 6-foot, 170-pound sophomore, leads Whiteville on offense with 160 yards per game.
The Pirates erupted for 67 points in last week's win over St. Pauls, the most Lumberton has scored since a 68-45 victory at Overhills in 2008.
I got some flack, despite a 4-0 record that brought the season's tally to 13-2 (86 percent), for not picking Lumberton to score more points against St. Pauls. The greatest show on grass will score just enough in Whiteville to push the Pirates' record to 4-0.
Lumberton at Whiteville
Chalk up two more touchdowns for Marquez North, Robeson County’s sophomore leader in scoring and another 300-yard team rushing effort from the Pirates.
Lumberton 35, Whiteville 16
Lake View at Fairmont
After consecutive close losses to open the season, Fairmont won its first game last week against West Bladen and hopes to repeat similar success at home versus Lake View. Led by two of the county's top rushers in Tyreke Addison and Alex Gilchrist, Fairmont will even its record before a Sept. 17 bout with Trask.
Fairmont 26, Lake View 12
Purnell Swett at Red Springs
Swett has the county’s top scoring defense and takes a 2-1 record on the road to Red Springs where Eric Puryear is still searching for his first win with the Red Devils.
Purnell Swett 44, R. Springs 0
Pender at South Robeson
Unfortunately, Friday's game in Rowland could get ugly quick for Garron Warwick's Mustangs. South Robeson's first touchdown of the season will have to wait another week as unbeaten Pender continues its defensive dominance on the season.
Pender 42, South Robeson 0
West Bladen at St. Pauls
The Bulldogs peaked in a season-opening loss to Carrboro after consecutive blowout losses to Purnell Swett and Lumberton. Trey Sasser’s assures his players these early-season contests against 4A teams will better suit them when Three Rivers play begins in a few weeks. He’s right. But St. Pauls won’t see an improvement in the win column Friday against West Bladen.
West Bladen 26, St. Pauls 18
