River festival: The public is invited to the Lumber River Day Festival 2017. It will be held at the Lumber River State Park’s Princess Ann Access Area, located at 2819 Princess Ann Road in Orrum and will be a day of family fun and activities from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free canoe rides and activities, including a casting contest, pony rides, miniature train rides, and a bouncy house and slide in a new inside house. There will be food available for lunch and snacks, along with ice cream and frozen treats, or bring a picnic lunch. Learn about the animals along the Lumber River from exhibitors. Watermelon fun: The 32nd annual NC Watermelon Festival will be held in Murfreesboro through Aug. 5. It will feature its traditional agricultural parade, fireworks, watermelon-eating and seed-spit contests, Little Princess Contest, Little Mr. and Miss Farmer Contest, food fair, craft show, and amusement rides. Hot-air balloon tethered rides will be offered behind the Municipal Building on Aug. 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The rides will cost $15 per person. A miniature petting zoo will be open for children of all ages on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free pony rides also will be available. Memorial service: The Families and Friends of Murder and Homicide Victims support group will hold its 10th annual candlelight memorial services for those who have died as the result of homicide, domestic violence, drunk driving or vehicle homicide at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church Cherry Fellowship Hall. Health screenings: A City-Wide Rejuvenation Day in Lumberton will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Raymond B. Pennington Athletic Complex, located on Hornet Road. Services and screenings will include vision, hearing, blood pressure, dental and fluoride varnish for children, and glucose checks. There will also be voter registration, live music, faith-based resource informational booths, educational demonstrations, and culinary healthy food demonstrations as well as raffles, bungee jumps, games, give-ways and free food for children. Tractor pull: The Robeson County Shriners-Sudan Tomcats will hold a Truck and Tractor Pull both evenings at 7 at the Robeson County Fairgrounds, located at 3750 N.C. 41 South in Lumberton. Admission is $20 for people ages 13 and up, $5 for those ages 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. The event is the largest fundraiser for the club, which raises money for Shriner hospitals.
