SOUTHERN PINES — Award-winning male chorus Chanticleer is scheduled to perform Oct. 2 at the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines.

The 8 p.m. performance is part of the Classical Concert Series presented by the Arts Council of Moore County, Parsec Financial Wealth Management and Sunrise Theater. Tickets are still available.

The Oct. 2 concert’s title is “Heart of a Soldier.” It is about the art of soldiering, the pageant of war, the absurdity of battle, the loves left behind and the hope of peace.

Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by the New Yorker, the San Francisco-based Grammy award-winning ensemble is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a stop in Southern Pines. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its seamless blend of 12 male voices ranging from soprano to bass.

Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978. The group became known first for its interpretations of Renaissance music, and was later a pioneer in the revival of the South American baroque, recording several award-winning titles in that repertoire. In 2008, Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America and inducted in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.

There are two other concerts in the Classical Concert Series. The Escher String Quartet is to perform Feb. 26, and pianist Jon Nakamatsu on March 26. Nakamatsu won the Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1997.

A subscription for all three concerts is available at $90 per person, $75 for Arts Council members. Tickets for two of the concerts are $60 per person, $50 for Arts Council members. Tickets to individual concerts are $35, $30 for Arts Council members. Tickets may be bought at the Arts Council offices, located at Campbell House, 482 E.
