FAIRMONT — The Border Belt Museum will host a light Veterans Day breakfast social at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11 for veterans and the community.

Cinnamon buns, juice, and coffee will be served.

An open invitation to all veterans is extended annually to attend this event, which will be held in the museum located in historic downtown Fairmont. Special guests this year include U.S. Army Maj. Gen. (Ret.) William Kirkland and U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) George Hogan.

The reception is a drop-in event with veterans staying and leaving as they please. In the past, many have come dressed in their service hats, caps, or uniforms with badges of service adorning them. Museum founder, the late Wiley Taylor, himself a WWII infantry captain, is honored in the museum with his framed photograph displayed on the Fairmont’s Finest Wall of Fame.

After refreshments have been served, the guests can socialize. swap war stories, and receive certificates and small U.S. flags from curators Charles Kemp and Lib Haywood.

Kemp, a retired U.S. history teacher, has worked at the museum since January 2014.

“When I taught it was a requirement each year for my history students to make original appreciation cards and personally give them to veterans on both Veterans and Memorial days. I wanted my students to understand the sacrifices and commitment others had made for all of the rest of us,” Kemp said.

The museum also will have 30 patriotic flags on display from Nov. 5 to Nov. 12, located in the grass area near Main Street.
