March 20 is the first day of spring. I know, where was winter? Time is flying here at the library. We’ve done so much to keep you entertained, and we’ve enjoyed it so much that it’s hard to believe that it’s almost time for another season to begin.
Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking spring is a time for outdoors, but there will be plenty of days that the weather doesn’t cooperate, or that you just can’t handle the pollen anymore. So let us give you some ideas.
If you’ve been following our calendar thus far, then you know we have storytimes at our Lumberton library twice a week. But did you know we have added storytimes to our St. Pauls library? We also have added a storytime at our Pembroke library. Lumberton’s storytimes are Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. Our St. Pauls storytime is on Wednesdays at 2 p.m,. and our Pembroke location is on Thursdays at 4 p.m.
Want something totally new? How about something for our young scientists? Our new STEM program launched on Friday. The host is our very own Lauren in the Children’s Library. For ages 8 to 12, the focus will be on hands-on science. Yep, all hands-on, no reading about it. The Friday experiment was building a bridge with odd things like paperclips, string, a plastic cup, etc. And the bridge had to be able to support real weight. Science doesn’t get any cooler than our STEM program.
Now we know I have to encourage reading. This is a library, after all. We will be starting our Spring into a Series, an on-going serial book expo. We will have several favorites ready to be read for the first or 50th time. Titles such as “The Magic Treehouse,” “Spiderwick,” “The Boxcar Children,” “Goosebumps,” “Little House on the Prairie,” and “Keepers of the School.” Get started on a new series, or read one again, before the summer rush.
Now for a great announcement. We’ve had two of our young patrons read 500 books for our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. This means they are almost ready for kindergarten. Congratulations Kaileigh and Carson. Their names are on our window under the 500 marker and they received a cool tote and a trip to the treasure box. Please bring your children to get involved in this wonderful program to get children prepared for kindergarten.
