LUMBERTON — For the second year in a row, Prevention Partners has awarded Southeastern Health the Excellence Recognition for reaching the highest standards in workplace health and prevention.

Southeastern Health has sustained this recognition by earning straight A’s in four modules of WorkHealthy America, a Prevention Partners initiative addressing tobacco use, physical activity, nutrition and the overall culture around health and wellness.

Over the past two years, Southeastern Health’s WorkHealthy Committee has implemented several initiatives, including an employee herb garden located outside the employee cafeteria; an on-site fitness center open 24/7 with Fit Boxes located in various departments throughout the system; the Stop Lite program in the cafeteria to let customers know which items are healthier; healthier food choices priced lower than unhealthy items; an employee blog that focuses on physical activity, nutrition and stress management; and our continued extensive disease management program.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged Southeastern Health’s WorkHealthy America excellence recognition.

“The CDC is truly honored to be a strong partner with Prevention Partners. The work that you do is outstanding; it’s science-based and also incredibly practical. As we’re trying to make progress in hospital and school environments, you’ve worked through the barriers that come up naturally and shown that it can be done. You are the experts in taking prevention from the hypothetical to the very practical — and succeeding,” said Janet Collins, director of division of nutrition, physical activity and obesity from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Southeastern Health sets a high bar in establishing and sustaining a workplace where employees can make healthy choices,” said Meg Molloy, Prevention Partners president and CEO. “I applaud this great effort and the commitment of SeHealth’s leadership to create a culture of wellness.”

The Excellence Recognition honors Southeastern Health’s commitment to employee health as demonstrated by its policies, programs and benefits to support employee health, optimize employee productivity and integrate wellness into daily operations.

“Our commitment to a healthy workplace is truly our commitment to our employees. We want to be the best place possible for our employees to work and want to provide a good mix of positive reinforcement mechanisms to help us stay as healthy as we possibly can. Whether it’s tobacco cessation efforts or discounted memberships to our fitness centers, we truly believe it is the right approach to advancing our culture of a healthy workplace,” said David Sumner, the vice president of human services and planning for Southeastern Health.
