RED SPRINGS — A ride along Main Street on an all-terrain vehicle turned into a chase with lawmen and ended with an arrest.

Carlie Hugh Chavis, 21, of 1044 McGoogan Farm Road in Shannon, was arrested Tuesday after leading police on a chase in which speeds surpassed 80 mph, according to Red Springs police Capt. Kimothy Monroe.

Chavis was charged with fleeing in a motor vehicle to elude arrest, three counts of injury to personal property, resisting a public officer, operating vehicle without insurance, driving a vehicle with no registration, and operating a motorcycle/moped without a helmet.

He was jailed under a $4,500 secured bond.

Monroe said police saw a person without a helmet traveling down Main Street on an ATV. When they tried to stop the ATV, the driver tried to speed away. The chase ended about three miles outside of town, at Shannon and McGoogan Farm roads, and Chavis was arrested without further incident.
