FAIRMONT — The Highway Patrol is waiting on results of autopsy to determine the identity of a person who was killed this weekend in a single-vehicle accident.

According to a report by Trooper R.A. Smith, a 2012 Chevrolet passenger car was traveling east on N.C. 130, near Fairgrove Road and west of Fairmont, when it exited the road to the left, overturned, struck a tree and burst into flames, killing the driver.

The body was badly burned and has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification, according to the patrol.

The accident happened about 3:45 a.m., according to the patrol. The driver was alone in the vehicle. It was “undetermined” whether the person was wearing a seat belt or not.

The fatality is the first on county roads since July 9, according to the Highway Patrol.
