With today and Thursday remaining to contribute, the Empty Stocking Fund is in need of a last-minute surge.

We are sure we will add the full $7,500 match as we just need a handful or so of donations of at least $50 to take full advantage, so we are just a bit shy of $50,000 raised. We also are aware of a substantial donation that will arrive today or Thursday.

Still, it will take a strong finish to reach $65,000, which is where the Fund has typically finished before last year’s record total of just more than $85,000.

When the $12,000 and change that was unspent from last year is added into the total, we have enough money to serve about 1,300 of the 1,950 children that the Department of Social Services has deemed eligible to receive help. Let’s see how many more of those children can be checked off Santa’s list before 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The largest gift today, for $2,500, is offered anonymously. There are also two more gifts in honor of Jack Braswell.

It’s too late to mail a check and it arrive in time, so if you want to make a donation come see us at 2175 Roberts Ave. in Lumberton.
