PEMBROKE — The final week of the filing period for Lumbee Tribal Council began Monday with a second person filing for the District 7 seat that encompasses South Pembroke and Union.

Anthony Miller joins Norman Woodward “Woody” Sampson in the race to replace Robert Chavis, who is ineligible to seek re-election.

Miller works for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and serves in the U.S. Army Reserves.

“I have never been more inspired, motivated, focused and dedicated to serving others as I have become since I decided to run for Lumbee Tribal Council District 7,” Miller said in a statement. “I honestly believe the Lord wants God fearing Christians in office who will put him first and the betterment of the people second. It doesn’t take politicians to bring about effective change. It takes honest people willing to put others and the betterment of a community first, having no personal agenda and willing to stand for what is right and the integrity that our tribe was founded on.”

Miller did not provide The Robesonian with a photograph.

The election will be held Nov. 17. In addition to filling seven seats on the council, voters will have the chance to elect a tribal chairman.

The filing period ends at 5 p.m Friday. Anyone wishing to file as a candidate can do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.today through Friday at the Elections Board office at 78-D, Three Hunts Drive, in COMtech on N.C. 711.
