LUMBERTON — A 29-year-old man was killed in the second homicide in Lumberton within four days.

Kevin Lamont Stephens was found shot in the area of Meadowview apartments at about 5:15 Saturday morning and pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, according to a statement from the Lumberton Police Department.

Police on Saturday interviewed two people they believed may have been involved in the shooting, but as of Saturday night no charges had been filed.

Police Capt. Terry Parker said it was too early in the investigation to comment on a possible motive for the shooting.

Officers went to the Meadowview Road housing complex after receiving a call of shots fired there. Stephens was found near apartment 10, the statement said. The Police Department is being assisted by the District Attorney’s Office investigator.

Stephens, who was also known as Kel-Bo, lived on Lovette Road. One of the two people being questioned suffered a leg injury during the shooting, but information on his condition and identity were not available on Saturday morning.

Anyone with information should call Detective Dereck Evans at the Lumberton Police Department at 910-671-3845.

On Wednesday night, 23-year-old Ryan Smith was found shot and sitting in a vehicle near the intersection of Beech Court and Spruce Streets. Smith, who had lived in Dublin, was later pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Lumberton police are asking that anyone with information in that shooting call Detective Chuck Leavitt at the Lumberton Police Department 910-671-3845.
