ASHEVILLE (AP) — About 75 people marched in Asheville as part of the Black Lives Matter movement to call attention to a white police officer’s shooting of a black man involved in a high-speed chase earlier this month.

Multiple media outlets reported the march Thursday was followed by a sit-in protest at the Asheville Police Department asking for justice for 35-year-old Jai Williams, who was shot to death July 2.

Vicki Meath with Just Economics says the group wants transparency and accountability from the Asheville Police Department.

Protesters want the officer who shot Williams to be fired. They also want an apology from Police Chief Tammy Hooper.

Police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse says the department respects people’s right to peacefully protest.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
