GREEENSBORO (AP) — Greensboro’s city council has approved an extension for the International Civil Rights Center & Museum to repay about $800,000.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports (http://bit.ly/2bdalWy) the council voted 5-4 Tuesday to give the museum until February 2018 to repay the loan, with the city forgiving one dollar for every dollar the museum raised.

The museum opened in 2010 and honors the sit-in movement that began Feb. 1, 1960, when four black N.C. A&T freshmen refused to leave the whites-only lunch counter at the Woolworth store.

In 2013, the city agreed to loan the museum $1.5 million over three years. The contract said the city would forgive $1 of the loan for every $1 the museum raised from September 2013 until July 2015.

The first installment was due June 30.
