Lumberton officer shoots suspect in thefts


LUMBERTON — A Lumberton police officer shot a woman tonight who was suspected in several thefts, The Robesonian has learned.

The woman suffered severe injuries and was being flown to a hospital for medical care.

The shooting happened at the Dollar General on Martin Luther King Drive. At 7:30 p.m. the State Bureau of Investigation was at the store, which was surrounded by police vehicles. Officers were interviewing people at the store and searching a still-running truck.

Few details were immediately available, but multiple sources have told The Robesonian that the woman was suspected in several thefts in the West Lumberton area and that the officer spotted her car and followed her to the Dollar General. There, she reportedly tried to run him over and he fired shots at her car.

Lumberton police at the scene referred questions to the SBI, which typically handles investigations of officer-involved shootings.
