RALEIGH (AP) — Wake County sheriff’s deputies say the body of a teen missing after a wreck has been found near a pond.

Local media outlets reported that the body of 17-year-old Lauren Maria Jenkins was found Sunday in some woods near the scene of a wreck Friday night.

Authorities say Jenkins failed to yield as she tried to make a left turn and pulled in front of another car.

Sheriff’s spokesman John Jones did not say whether investigators suspect foul play. Jones says the North Carolina Highway Patrol asked deputies to help search and a dog picked up the scent about the same time a neighbor found the body.

“I’ve lived here my whole life and we’ve never had anything like this happen,” neighbor Beverly Bahin told WRAL-TV after she came home from church.

Friends were worried when they didn’t hear from her after the wreck.

“I honestly thought that she was in a friend’s house kind of thing and she just needed like a couple days maybe just to calm down,” friend Savannah Beale told the TV station.

Jones said Jenkins’ body will sent to the state medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Jenkins was a student at Leesville Road High School. Wake County schools spokeswoman Lisa Luten said counselors were available for students Monday.

The investigation is continuing.
