PEMBROKE — Former Pembroke Police Chief Grant Florita reported back to work Friday after a suspension and demotion.

Florita was suspended without pay for three days on Monday and was removed from his position as chief of police, according to Tyler Thomas, Pembroke town manager.

Florita returned to work Friday at the rank of senior officer, according to Thomas. Florita is a 17-year veteran of Pembroke Police Department, who began as chief on Jan 1, 2013.

The reason for his punishment has not been released, with Thomas saying it is a personnel matter covered by North Carolina privacy laws.

Police Capt. Edward Locklear has been acting chief. Locklear previously was serving as assistant police chief.

No timetable has been put in place for the hiring of a permanent replacement, according to Thomas.
