CHARLOTTE — Applications to attend United States service academies will be accepted through Oct. 6 by North Carolina’s 9th District congressman.
Each year, U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger nominates 40 local students for appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The deadline this year is 5 p.m. on Oct. 6.
“Each year, dozens of local students compete for the opportunity to commit the next nine years in service to our country. Helping these students realize that dream is one of the best parts of my job,” Pittenger said. “Because of their commitment, we put extra effort into the service academy process, and generally receive more than our fair share of appointments.”
High school seniors from Pittenger’s district, which includes all of Robeson County, are encouraged to apply for a nomination. Information packets have been sent to all local high schools, but students must contact Pittenger’s office directly at 704-362-1060 to request an application and to ensure all steps are completed prior to the Oct. 6 deadline.
All qualified applicants who submit their completed packets by Oct. 6 will be scheduled for interviews with Pittenger’s Academy Selection Committee. There are 10 nominations to each of the service academies available exclusively for students in the 9th District.
