DSS tweaks its hours

LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Department of Social Services will have new hours effective today.
Offices will now open weekdays at 8 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m., and close at 5 p.m. instead of 5:15 p.m.
Becky Morrow, director of the department, requested and was granted the new hours during a recent meeting of the department’s board. Opening and closing earlier would be more convenient for both clients and DSS staff, she said.
“We have always used the 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 hours of other county departments,” Morrow said. “But it makes more sense to use 8 to 5 like most other businesses do. A lot of our clients get here before 8 on their way to work and then have to wait in line until 8:15 for us to open.”
Morrow said that the new hours will not affect the hours DSS employees work, but will save the county some money in overtime. With the new hours, she said, the last group of clients can be seen earlier so that employees will not have to stay as late as 6:30 to 7 p.m., as is now necessary at times, to finish taking applications and providing other client services.
Morrow said a drop box has been placed outside in front of DSS offices so that anyone needing to drop off information does not have to enter the building.
“We have always had a box inside the building where people could drop off information with our receptionist,” Morrow said. “But now if someone needs to drop off anything before 8 in the morning when offices open, or after 5 when the offices close, they can just drop it in the box in front of the door.”
Robeson County Manager Ricky Harris said the county commissioners did not have to approve the change.
