RED SPRINGS — A 33-year-old Red Springs man who managed to escape from police after he was arrested for allegedly robbing a convenience store is back in custody.

According to Police Chief Ronnie Patterson, Myron Chavis, of 459 Chavlock Road, sneaked out of the Red Springs Police Department after he was arrested at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday for attempting to rob the Jiffy Stop at 1101 W. Third Ave. Patterson said Chavis fled on foot through the back door of the building when a police officer left the room to get Chavis some water to drink.

“The police officer thought the building was secure,” Patterson said.

Patterson said Chavis, who was still in handcuffs and shackles, was arrested 12 hours later inside an abandoned house, which was located about a block from the Police Department. The building had been searched before.

“We searched the abandoned house earlier but he was up under the house,” Patterson said.

Patterson said Chavis had attempted to rob the convenience store at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday by pulling out a weapon and demanding money from the attendant. Patterson said the attendant then pulled out her own firearm but Chavis was able to snatch the gun from her hand and escaped on foot. Nobody was injured during the incident, he said.

Chavis is charged with attempted armed robbery, larceny from a person and possession of firearm by a felon. He was jailed under a $75,000 secured bond.

Chavis’ criminal history includes second-degree trespassing and not paying child support.
