PEMBROKE — The town manager of Pembroke has been suspended for 10 days without pay, according to the town’s attorney.

Attorney Gary Locklear confirmed the suspension of Oryan Lowry, but said he could not give more details because it is a personnel issue.

Action to suspend Lowry was taken during a closed session meeting during Monday’s Pembroke Council meeting.

“The council will need to meet within the next 10 days to assess the situation,” Locklear said.

Locklear said that minutes from the closed session meeting were “corrected” to say that some personnel action was taken during the meeting. The minutes do not specifically mention a suspension, said Locklear.

Locklear said that town employees have received a memo stating that Lowry will be out of the office until next week.

“The memo does not say that the manager is suspended. It just states he will be away for 10 days and that Marie Moore (town finance director) is in charge,” Locklear said. “It also states that town personnel will be updated on the situation within about 10 days.”

Attempts by The Robesonian to contact Lowry were unsuccessful.

The Robesonian spoke with Mayor Milton Hunt and Councilman Allen Dial, but both said they cuold not speak about the issue because it was personnel.

Lowry was hired as Pembroke’s manager in July 2012. He replaced McDuffie Cummings, who was the town manager for 34 years.

When hired, Lowry was employed as a science teacher at South Robeson High School. Lowry is paid $53,000 a year, according to Moore.
