LUMBERTON — Two Lumberton teens have been charged in the murder of a 28-year-old man who was shot Friday after arguing with his ex-girlfriend, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
Thaddius Leon Scott Jr, 17, has been charged with first-degree murder in Brandon Lynn Sampson’s death as well as discharging a firearm into occupied property, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives for the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. T.J. Kenneth Hammonds, 19, has been charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, Thompson said.
Sampson, who lived on Saddletree Road, went to 612 Higgins Road to visit his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Oxendine and their child at about 7:40 p.m., Thompson said. An argument began over who would take the baby and the dispute was taken out into the front yard.
At that point, said Thompson, a fight broke out between Sampson and the boyfriend of Oxendine’s sister, who also lives at Higgins Road home.
According to Thompson, Sampson was starting to leave when several people, including Scott and Hammonds, pulled up to the yard in a truck and fired one shot, hitting Sampson in the back of the neck. Sampson attempted to drive away, running his vehicle off the road into the woods, Thompson said.
Sampson later died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Thompson could not elaborate on the relationship between the people involved or Hammonds’ role as an accessory to the crime.
Scott, who lives at 747 Huggins Road, is being held at the Robeson County Detention Center under no bond. Hammonds, who lives at of 184 Woody Farm Road, is being held under a $100,000 bond.
The Sheriff’s Office is closed this week so The Robesonian was unable to get photographs of Scott and Hammonds for publication.
