ST. PAULS — A St. Pauls teenager was killed and another seriously injured when their car collided with a tree on Wednesday afternoon, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Emily Louise Hagens, the driver and 16-year-old granddaughter of St. Pauls Police Chief R. Thomas Hagens, was taken to UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill, according to a report filed by Trooper J.M. Bullard.

Bobby Willis, also 16, was pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Willis, who was in the passenger seat of the 2011 Kia SUV, lived on Shaw Mill Road in St. Pauls, the report said.

The accident occurred two miles north of St. Pauls on East McRainey Road near Oakland Road, where Hagens lives, just before 2 p.m., the report said.

Hagens and Willis, who were both wearing seat belts, were found pinned inside the vehicle when Lumberton Rescue and Emergency Medical Services responded, according to the report.

According to the report, Hagens was driving north on East McRainey Road when the vehicle ran off the road, hit a thick guide-wire supporting a utility pole and crashed into the tree.
