PEMBROKE — A flick of a switch could have kept a Red Springs man — and more than 3 ounces of marijuana — from police custody on Sunday.

Sherwood Lavon Ferguson, 21, was pulled over for not turning on his headlights in the parking lot of a West Third Street Kangaroo station at about 9 p.m., according to Sgt. Matt Locklear. Police found 89 grams of marijuana in the car, Locklear said.

“They could smell it and some of it was in plain sight,” Locklear said. Officers also found $2,012 in cash in the car, Locklear said.

Ferguson, who lives on McAllister Circle in Red Springs, is charged with maintaining a drug vehicle and possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana.

“The department’s traffic enforcement efforts has made an impact on the drug activity in our community, at times a simple traffic stop can result in a drug arrest,” Police Chief Grant Florita said.

Ferguson has been placed in the Robeson County jail under a $2,500 bond.
