HOPE MILLS — A day after a body was pulled from the South River, the family of missing 15-year-old Danielle Locklear — and a shaken community — are still longing for answers.

Locklear was last seen on March 11 leaving her grandparents’ home on Threncholm Lane. She had told her grandfather she was going to the home of a friend, Alexus Cross, nearby but Cross said she never arrived.

Hope Mills Police Chief Joel Acciardo said Thursday it could take up to three days to identify the body found in the river, The Fayetteville Observer reported. The South River runs along the Sampson-Cumberland County line.

Investigators said a recent tip claiming Locklear had been beaten along the nearby Little Rockfish Creek was “unfounded,” The Fayetteville paper said.

Locklear’s disappearance has inspired an outpouring of support. On March 22 more than 300 people joined to search for the South View High School student. A Facebook page dedicated to the search has more than 10,000 followers.
