PEMBROKE — A 23-year-old man has been arrested three months after robbing two acquaintances, threatening to kill them and claiming he had murdered before, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
Harmon Alexander Dial was charged April 2 with two counts of kidnapping for forcing 21-year-old Christian Freeman and 20-year-old Aaron Michael Jacobs to drive around Pembroke against their will on Jan. 16. Dial is also charged with robbery and assault and battery.
Freeman told deputies he was at his W.L. Moore Road home in Maxton with Jacobs when Dial called and asked him to come over. When they arrived at Dial’s Sanctuary Road home, he was in the yard.
Jacobs, of J.I. Road in Maxton, said the three left to buy cigarettes.
When they were headed back to Dial’s home, Dial grabbed a flashlight and “began to curse at them,” threatening to “beat [their] brains out,” the report said.
Freeman told deputies he tried to calm Dial and Dial struck him on the right side of his face with the flashlight.
According to the report, Dial “stated several times he was going to kill everything inside the vehicle” and that he had killed a man five years ago and was “having bad dreams about it.” Dial said he was under investigation for killing the man and had also been involved in a robbery.
Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives for the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, said to his knowledge Dial is not a murder suspect, and that Dial’s claims had not yet been investigated.
While they drove down N.C. 710, Dial grabbed the wheel and tried to run the car off the road before telling Freeman to stop at a dirt road leading to Dial’s house, the report said. According to the report, Dial then told Freeman “you got three seconds to empty your pockets and if I find anything inside your pockets I’m going to gut your friend.”
About $800 in cash was stolen, Thompson said.
Dial then told the men to get out of the car and walk through the woods towards a friend’s house where “he is waiting on us with a shotgun,” the report said. When no one answered the door at the house, Dial told the men to get on their knees, pushing Jacobs towards a barking pit bull tied up in the yard, the report said.
Dial told the men he was going inside to get the shotgun and said “I’m going to give y’all a five-second head start to get back to the vehicle,” the report said, citing Freeman’s account. Freeman said Dial went inside and they ran back through the woods, got in his car and drove to his home.
Freeman suffered injuries to his face, right shoulder and right hand, the report said. His car was also damaged.
Dial has been jailed with no bond.
