MAXTON — Maxton is tidying up the town on Saturday and the director of Public Works is hopeful that a lot of volunteers will turn out for the event.

“We will be picking up roadside litter,” said Sheldon McNair. “There’s a big trash problem in the town. It’s amazing how much paper can accumulate.”

McNair said that Public Works employees recently targeted litter along the sides of roadways on a couple of Fridays and were able to fill 30 large bags with trash.

According to McNair, anyone interested in participating in Saturday’s cleanup should gather at the Freight Building on Water Street between 8 and 9 a.m. Volunteers will be issued a vest and gloves and provided trash bags.

“Depending on the number of volunteers, roads for cleanup will then be assigned,” McNair said.

According to McNair, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has donated the vests, gloves and orange bags to be used during the cleanup.

McNair said that once bags are filled with litter, they can be taken to the Freight Building or left along the side of the state or town roadways where the litter is collected. Bags taken to the Freight Building, or left for pickup along the roadways, will be eventually taken to the Robeson County landfill in St. Pauls for disposal.

Maxton is not the only community in Robeson County that has a trash problem. The county Board of Commissioners has recently acknowledged a countywide litter problem and is seeking ways to deal with the situation.

Steve Edge, the county’s Solid Waste director, has presented the commissioners with a proposal that he says with proper funding could go a long way in cleaning up litter along county roadways and providing litter law enforcement.

County Manager Ricky Harris, has said that Edge’s plan would require the hiring of at least two full-time law enforcement officers at a cost between $125,000 and $150,000 a year.
