FAIRMONT — After the rain had cleared, a pedestrian walking along N.C. 130 was struck by a car and killed on Wednesday, accoring to the state Highway Patrol.
At 9:07 p.m., pedestrian 60-year-old Larry Carnell Powell, of Leggett Road in Fairmont, was hit by motorist 77-year-old Joseph Kenneth Hardin, of 52nd Avenue North, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to Trooper M.J. Miles.
Hardin, who was driving a 2005 Lexus, and traveling west on N.C. 130 about eight-tenths of a mile from Fairmont near Old Stage Road when he hit Powell.
Police say Powell was wearing dark clothing, and walking illegally in the roadway. They also suspect he was under the influence of alcohol and are awaiting a toxicology report, according to Sgt. Daniel Hilburn.
Hardin received no injuries and has not at this time been charged with any wrongdoing, the report said.
