LUMBERTON — Before the first drops have even fallen, Hurricane Arthur is already raining on Lumberton’s parade — or rather, its fireworks.

Lumberton’s annual Family Fourth celebration, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Lumberton Senior High School, has been postponed due to weather. As of 2 p.m., a makeup date had not been determined.

Arthur, the first 2014 Atlantic hurricane, is expected to bring some showers and the possibility of thunderstorms to the Lumberton area beginning this afternoon. While the impact locally is predicted to be minimal, the storm is expected to hit North Carolina’s coast as a Category 2 storm with winds as strong as 90 mph, prompting Got. Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency.

Weather-permitting, Robesonians can still catch the St. Pauls Volunteer Fire Department’s fireworks at dusk on Friday at the corner of South Fifth and West McLean streets in St. Pauls and the the Lumbee Fireworks Sky Show on Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Lumbee Regional Development Association Office Complex in Pembroke.

The Robesonian will update this story online as it develops.
