LAURINBURG — In the first of two deaths that led Sheriff Shep Jones to term this holiday weekend a “very violent” one in the county, a Hamlet man was arrested on Saturday for the shooting death of a Laurel Hill woman.

On Sunday, a Raeford college student was found dead on Plantation Road in Laurinburg, having apparently been shot to death.

Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 46-year-old Amanda Pearson of Tabernacle Road was shot while at the home of a relative at 6861 Old Wire Road in Laurel Hill.

Shawn McLaurin, 39, of Hamlet, and another individual had stepped outside the house into the front yard in a disagreement stemming from a card game, Jones said.

“They were all in there playing cards and two of the gentlemen got in an argument and they told one to go outside and cool down,” Jones said. “He went outside and then the other one went out.”

McLaurin removed a gun from his clothing and shot toward the home, penetrating the walls and hitting Pearson, who had remained inside, in the abdomen. Pearson was transported via private vehicle to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later Saturday night.

McLaurin was arrested on Saturday night in Laurel Hill and charged with first degree murder. He is being held without bond.

Around 9 a.m. on Sunday, Stuart Carmichael of Laurinburg was driving to work on Plantation Road when he noticed the body of 21-year-old Demonsha Clegg of Raeford on the side of the road.

Clegg had been reported missing by her family after being last seen at the Encore Club in McColl, S.C. early on Sunday morning. The Elizabeth City State University junior’s body was identified by family members.

“It’s a shame a young lady’s life was taken,” Jones said. “She was a third year student in college and her life was taken. She was home for the holidays and she was supposed to return to school [on Sunday].”

Though Jones said that Clegg had apparently been shot, authorities are not releasing further information regarding her injuries at this time. The body has been sent to the state medical examiner in Chapel Hill and the State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Scotland County, McColl, and Marlboro County, S.C. authorities in the investigation.

There are currently no suspects in the case.
