To the Editor,
In a recent article featuring past Tribal Administrator Leon Jacobs, it appears that both he and others in the Lumbee Administration still think there are still a bunch of ignorant Indians around here.
I don’t understand why Jacobs is getting a monthly stipend from the Lumbee Tribe. Is he still collecting the monies that were spent on the land around Raynham off of U.S. 301, which was meant for the landing strip for the private plane to come in and gamble at the Lumbee casinos? Everybody should remember that he was hired to get the casinos in here and when he couldn’t he left. In this article, it appears someone is saying that if it wasn’t for Mr. Jacobs there would not be any Lumbee monies in here.
The LRDA was founded in 1968 and this was when the Lumbees began getting money. Truth is if the money would have been left at the LRDA, no Lumbee would be going through what they are now. The Tribal Government could never make the Lumbee people pay back the money they have blundered. They will never be able to get Robeson County to tax them for being a member of the tribe.
That $5 you pay for an ID card is like going into the movies and leaving after you see it. You are still a U.S. citizen. There is no oath or pledge to the Lumbee flag. If there was, not many would be dumb enough to sign it.
There are more Lumbees in this area, this state and nation that have more education/sense than Mr. Jacobs. I was told at the first Lumbee election that the council members would be getting paid the $250. The Lumbee Tribal Council did not ride their float in the last Homecoming Parade for fear of some folks throwing tomatoes at them. Maybe this year, someone will get to throw some.
If the town of Pembroke will no longer cut privately owned lawns due to budget cuts, why can’t the tribe quit paying Jacobs? Jacobs needs to produce a copy of that letter.
