To the Editor,

The elected or appointed officials of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina are not to be trusted. They have all violated Articles VII.3 and XII.3 of the Lumbee Constitution by supporting an unconstitutional Tribal Council of 21 members and 14 districts.

Intentions by officials to continue with November elections to elect illegal Tribal Council members make every tribal official guilty of “malfeasance in office, gross disregard for tribal law or custom, and open abuse of authority.” In the Lumbee Constitution, Article IV.2, individuals committing these acts are to be removed from office.

Article III.2 provides that all tribal members are “secure in person” and that the tribal government is to preserve the rights of all tribal members. The tribal government has violated this Article by ignoring the will of the Lumbee people in the design of the Tribal Council for more than a decade.

I challenge individuals holding or running for tribal office to cite where in the Lumbee Constitution a November 2013 Tribal Council election must be held. The tribal members who are crying “constitutional crisis” on this continue to violate the rights, intelligence and law of Lumbee people. We can only stop the insanity when we start telling and living by the truth.

Use November 2013 polls to amend Lumbee Constitution to a nine member/nine-district Tribal Council. Elect nine new Tribal Council members by April 1, 2014.
